A few weeks ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences proposed nominating 10 films for the Best Picture category. If this was 1939––as the Castro series “1939: The Golden Year of Cinema” so abundantly demonstrates––10 films might not be enough. For some reason, 1939 produced more great films than nearly any other year in film history. While the Castro's 16-film series does not include such greats as Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, or Jesse James, there are plenty of films here to whet your appetite. What made 1939 such a great year? They had iconic comedies: WC Fields’ surreal Can’t Cheat an Honest Man and the Marx Brothers’ madcap At the Circus. And fabulous women: Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell in The Women and Greta Garbo in Ninotchka. Classic literary adaptation, such as William Wyler’s majestic Wutehring Heights and Sam Wood’s tear-jerking Goodbye Mr. Chips. But there’s also Gunga Din, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Another Thin Man, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington to name a few.
